Well, what you're describing sounds like me, fifteen years ago ^-^''' I was so excited about the story that I pretty much wanted to finish it, like yesterday XD
I also used to have problems with the plot, until I let the characters tell me the story. *shrugs* Don't know how else to put it ^-^' The only thing I can tell you is to let the characters talk about their thoughts, let them have a lot of dialogues, let them play. You won't lose the plot, as long as the characters keep going.
Well, the reactor probably could theoretically do that, but I don't know what it would do to the reactor itself. I don't think it would continue to work, when you open it and make it, well, short-circuit.
