Law abiding Citizen...um...grrrrrrrr

Yes, I did a lot of movie watching these days. And this one, even more dissappointing then the previous mentioned movies. And I even BOUGHT this one... What can I say? Since I never read spoilers, I didn't know what I was expecting, but not a people butchering Gerry. It may be a clever movie. And I did like Jamie Foxx. (Second movie I saw him in in a row) But this is downright cruel. Not even the nude backside nor the shirtless scenes will make me watch it again. Anyone saw it? Can't talk anymore about it, since I am so angry I wasted my money for this :(

Spoilers ahead for Law Abiding Citizen and Repo Men

Yes, I saw it, but I went into it knowing that it wasn't your typical poor victim of slaughtered family movie, and that Gerard was playing a character different from past performances. I rented it first, then I did buy a copy--I picked up several of Gerry's films at a 4 DVDs for 20 bucks sale. I probably would not have paid any more than that for it, I admit.

This is not a film I'd watch over and over, but I am glad I did watch it, and I'm glad that Gerard took a chance and played a morally dark character in it. He's getting typecast in affable good guy character roles, and throwing in the occasional villain is interesting to me and I am sure, to him as an actor. The reveal that his character is diabolical comes early enough for me, that I didn't waste a lot of energy empathizing with the character, but rather watched from a viewpoint of seeing what this guy would come up with next--and how GB was playing him.

GB was originally set to play the lawyer, I believe and took on the other role instead. I thought it a brave thing to do--taking roles like this keeps an actor fresh.

I actually can tolerate this film better than say, Jude Law's Repo Men which I actually saw on a sneak preview in the theatre. Jude was great and it had an interesting premise, but that film left such a bad taste in my mouth, I will probably never willingly watch it again. And I really wanted to like it. It wasn't so much the idea of repossessing transplanted/artificial organs as it was the horrendous cheat that after everything the hero went through, it was all a mechanically induced fantasy. I don't demand fairy tale endings, but I do ask that something a character I've invested two hours in getting to know, has been for something.

I'm careful about dvd's I buy--back when it was all VHS and they had gotten so cheap, I used to pick up everything an actor I liked was in--not any more. I have to have previously seen it (I usually rent from Netflix here in the US) and generally have the expectation that I will watch it more than once if I do buy it. Even if I adore an actor, it is rare I'll buy a film of theirs if I absolutely hated it.

Thanks so much Lisa for your opinion on this. OF COURSE Gerry played that character well! It showed how good he is as an actor! I do not deny that. But I gotta admit, even though I don't like the romantic comedies either, I do like my character to be the good guy. It happens with all my favourite actors.

Gary Oldman too. He has played so many villians, that it is hard to find him play a good guy.

I will not buy everything either anymore. This one did teach me a lesson. I will be careful of Repo Men then as well ;) Thanks for the warning but you made me curious.

Next for Gerry will be Gamer...pssst don't say anything if you already saw it.

Never see it, and based on what you say, I never will. I don't really like the actor to begin with :)
I thought of you yesterday, when I brought the movie Zodiac ;-)))) I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I'm going to think of you and what you could do with some caps of the movie when he's on screen ;-))

[identity profile] siriala.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You've never seen Zodiac ? I love that movie, but I saw it for Jake Gyllenhaal, not for RDJ (who was also great).

I've never seen your other movie Del so I can't comment, I'm just sorry for you that you didn't enjoy it.

Hey Dear! Well, this happens from time to time, when you are determined to see everything from your favourite actors. I am sure you know that feeling!

Since you like Jake G. Have you seen Prince of Persia? The trailer reminded me of LOTR. Was it good?

[identity profile] siriala.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I'll see it on DVD but from what I've heard, LotR is far better, not even really in the same league ;)

I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy Jake's smile and abs, though ;D

Oh ok thanks for the info! The trailer looked pretty good to me on big screen. But I decided, I can not go and watch EVERY movie in the theatre or at all. We just rented Avatar, but I am not sure if I really want to watch it.

[identity profile] siriala.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't regret that I went to see Avatar on the big screen, just like I'm really glad I saw Inception there too, both because of the gorgeous special effects. The plot of Avatar is not really original but it's a very entertaining movie, I think you might enjoy it a lot.

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
You saw Inception?! I am not sure if I want to go and see it. I love Nolan's stuff but I don't think Leo is hot. And my money is really an issue these days...

Thanks for the heads up for Avatar!

[identity profile] siriala.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you've seen the actor meme in my last post, you know what I think of Leo, his supposed hotness and talents... But yet Inception was great (the kind of film you have to see more than once to get it all, but we're talking Nolan here so it's not surprising) and there were other characters I liked a lot, one very slashable pairing, and the actor playing Eames certainly wasn't hard on my eyes and my ears ;D Not to mention my lovely Marion Cotillard that I always love. If you can't go see the movie on the big screen - and I totally get the money thing ! - I really, really recommend seeing it on DVD once available.

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Deary! I am sorry for not having seen your meme. I am very very VERY bad at looking at my friends' pages *blush* I always get distracted by something. But I might check it out.

Are you planning on seeing the A-Team? I just became aware of it today and I think it might be a very slashy thing again even though I can not imagine Liam Neeson as Hannibal!

[identity profile] siriala.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know ;)

No, I don't think I'll see it. I wasn't a fan of the original series and to top it all I didn't hear many good things about the movie. Then I'm like you, I can't see each and every movie :)

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'll tell you what I think about it after I saw it :D

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is certainly not a movie to be recommented.

Zodiac...who is in it? Gerry Butler or Robert Downey Jr.? Siriala's answer confused me a bit lol or both??

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
oh ok thanks! My "to watch" list grows and grows...

[identity profile] mistressmarilyn.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
This movie started out so promising . . . I was looking forward to seeing how the GB character would make his point, make an impact on the JF character. I was hoping for some psychological impact, not just an over-the-top mess of explosions and willy-nilly destruction.

I was disappointed (to say the least).

[identity profile] delorita.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW you really seem to watch a lot of movies yourself :D Glad there is someone I can discuss them with :D

I understood the meaning of the butchering of the murderer. I also saw the point why he killed that guy in the hole, seeing the point of being punctual etc. But when he just killed that guy in his cell, just like that, because he wanted to get into the isolation cell, I actually didn't really want to watch it anymore. I kept thinking he'd kill the lawyer's wife and girl. I am so glad he didn't!
